Sight words...excellent for 1st grade and 2nd grades. Students enjoyed the independence of going thru the stack of words, tapping to hear the word and flagging words they missed. They liked the self assessment and having their own personal list of words they did not know.

Telling time- grade 3-4. Click on how long for elapsed time problems

Chicktionary- gives 7 letters & have to make as many words as you can starting with 3 letter words up to 7 letter words. longer words can be challenging, but students had fun working together to try to find as many words as they can. It is a great app for critical thinking and spelling. Students have to find at least 32 words from seven available. This is fun, challenging and addicting. You can not chose what letters appear but you can concentrate on certain vowels or letter sounds that appear.

Cookie doodle- k-3rd grade. Use the letter cookies to have students practice forming print letters using piping, following directions, improve vocabulary such as above, below, right, left, etc. Also can do math problems with the cookies made including addition and subtraction, fractions, percentages by eating and adding cookies to the plate.)

English language arts activity:
apps needed: mad libs and freesaurus
1. Review with students definitions of various parts of speech.
2. Prompt them to reflect and discuss what makes one word choice better than another
3. Have them practice using freesaurus app to generate more interesting words from common words
4. Launch mad libs app and go to one of the exercises. Use freesaurus to substitute their common word choices with others
5. Practice reading the new story - can even record it.

Mad libs was great for 3-5th graders because they enjoyed making up the silly stories and after just a few reminders of what the grammatical elements were (adj, nouns, verbs, etc) they are able to continue w/out assistance.
